Austrian Climber Convicted After Girlfriend Freezes to Death on Grossglockner
An Austrian court has convicted climber Thomas P of gross negligent manslaughter in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Kerstin G, who froze to death on the Grossglockner mountain in January 2025. Judge Norbert Hofer imposed a five-month suspended sentence and a fine of €9,600 on Thomas P, who was found guilty of neglecting his duty as the tour leader by continuing the climb despite his girlfriend's lower level of expertise and the severe winter conditions. While the defendant argued that he and his girlfriend were in good shape during a helicopter flyover at 10:30 PM, the prosecution pointed out that the defendant did not call for help and later abandoned his girlfriend alone on the rock face to go for help, which the judge said was particularly egregious since the victim was found to be hanging upside down in -20°C windchill. While the judge said that the loss of life was not intentional, the trial brought to light a history of similar incidents through testimony from a former girlfriend who was also abandoned by Thomas P on the same mountain in 2023.
